Social Language

This is a continuation of a wonderful presentation on understanding the higher functioning socially impacted student which we all deal with in our classrooms. I hope you take the time to look it over.

  1. It was a nice presentation and overview. It also made me think a little about how this digital age affects our children on the spectrum. With everything out there, where does it all fit in with these kids? Technology seems so attractive to many of them on some level. While so often they have such difficulty connecting with people, they seem quite comfortable interacting with a computer. The general consensus seems to be to limit their exposure, that it allows them more opportunity to retreat from social interaction and reality, but I wonder if there is some way to use technology to help their social development. I would imagine it is only a matter of time before research is done to give us some answers. I'll be curious to find out.

  2. Michelle,
There has been some research and some programs digitally that have helped some of the more involved expand their mean length of utterance, improve literacy etc. A recent online 10 day conference I just took showed some of the recent research being done to see how computers can assist those on the spectrum. Nothing has been proven as yet since it is really new research but it is interesting.
